Code of Practice for Disability Equipment, Wheelchair and Seating Services

Code of Practice for Disability Equipment, Wheelchair and Seating Services

The first ever UK wide Code of Practice Book for Disability Equipment, Wheelchair and Seating Services has been published and is now available, as a hard copy or an eBook.

The Code covers commissioning (or procurement), service provision and clinical responsibilities. It has a person-centered approach to it, as it considers, for example, integration of services – at commissioning and provider level, holistic and anticipatory assessments, personal health budgets and alternative funding options. It also has an outcome focus to it.

The Code can be used for many purposes: as a general guide, for tendering and evaluating services, performance and risk management, regulatory compliance, strategic and operational purposes and much more. It puts the user at the heart of services.

“However optimistic and committed governments and organisations are to improving outcomes for disabled people, practical steps are required to make these improvements; I believe this Code lays down steps that need to be taken. Let’s just hope it is followed!” Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, DL

“The Code sets a national (UK), and perhaps international, benchmark against which services can be measured, and sets a realistic level of service people should expect to receive – something that has been missing for a long time.” Sir Bert Massie CBE, DL

If you are in any way involved with the commissioning, provision or clinical aspects of disability or wheelchair services, then this Code is essential reading.
