The SAFEBED Study: The Use of Enclosed Beds for Children with Intellectual Disability

26 Nov 2025
Theatre 2

Enclosed beds are sometimes implemented for individuals with intellectual disability to manage sleep and/or behaviours that challenge overnight. Current enclosed bed provision in the UK is unclear, and there is no consensus guidance on the use of enclosed beds. We share the findings from our recent survey where we asked health and social care professionals about their views on enclosed beds, whilst inviting you to think about your own reasons for or against enclosed bed implementation. We will think about how going forward we can navigate the complicated enclosed bed landscape, highlighting the need for empirical research in this area.

  • Understand current enclosed bed provision in the UK.
  • Understand your own views on enclosed beds.
  • Consider the possible benefits and challenges of using enclosed beds in different scenarios.
