Supporting independence in people with upper limb impairments using Advanced Assistive Technologies: the pivotal role of occupational therapy

27 Nov 2025
Innovation Theatre

Upper limb impairments can result in people having little, limited or no hand or arm function and impact an individual’s ability to engage in everyday activities. Occupational therapists have a key role in enabling people with such impairments to live as full and independent a life as possible, part of which involves helping users to identify the most empowering assistive technologies for them. This presentation will explore upper limb impairment from an occupational therapy perspective and highlight how advanced assistive technologies can be used to maximise independence and improve quality of life.

  • This presentation will emphasise the OT's unique contribution to empowering individuals with upper limb impairment to achieve their full potential and actively participate in life using advanced assistive technologies. You will leave the session with a knowledge of how upper limb impairment affects lives and how you can use advanced assistive technologies in your practice to improve functional outcomes.
  • 1.What are upper limb impairments
  • 2.How do they present and affect and limit people
  • 3.How do you assess for AT’s and what do you look for (and what symptoms can AT’s help with)
  • 4.What categories of solutions are out there and how do they match people’s needs
