Empowering BME healthcare professionals: a new mentoring model for career growth

27 Nov 2025
Theatre 3
A pioneering study has developed a tailored mentoring model to support the career progression of Black and Minoritised Ethnic (BME) healthcare professionals in the UK. Findings revealed that psychosocial support—including trust-building, open conversations about ethnicity and racism, and safe spaces for reflection—is central to meaningful mentorship. The research also highlighted the value of mentoring circles, enabling BME professionals to share experiences, provide peer support, and strengthen collective resilience.

In this session, participants will gain practical insights and evidence-based strategies to develop inclusive mentoring programmes, address barriers to career progression, and drive culture change to create more equitable workplaces across health and social care.
Speakers
Anita Atwal, Associate Professor - University of East London
