Designing better home adaptations

26 Nov 2025
Keynote Theatre
Designing home adaptations is about more than function. Occupational therapists must balance safety, compliance and user dignity, while working within frameworks like the Building Safety Act and CDM Regulations.
Universal design principles help create spaces that are safe, usable and attractive. Yet too often, adaptations still look clinical or are poorly integrated into the home. This session will explore how Occupational Therapists can think more like designers, with a focus on both form and function. It will also give the first look at a new sketching app built for Occupational Therapists, making it quicker to plan and show options for rails, ramps and bathrooms.
  • Understand the OT’s role as a designer under CDM Regulations and the Building Safety Act.
  • Apply universal design principles to create safe, attractive and functional home adaptations.
  • Recognise the value of aesthetics in promoting dignity and acceptance of adaptations.
  • See how new tools can support quick, practical sketching of ramps, rails and bathrooms.
