CareFlex chairs are manufactured in Devon by a skilled team who understand that what leaves the factory is going to become an important part of somebody's everyday life. Every chair is made to order, combining hands-on craftsmanship with precision technology, detailed inspection and rigorous product testing.

CareFlex specialist seating is tested for strength, stability, durability and resistance to impact. Durability testing can involve up to 200,000 maximum-user-weight loading cycles to replicate the demands of years of use. Most CareFlex specialist chairs are also supported by a lifetime warranty on the steel frame, subject to the applicable warranty terms.

2. WaterCell Technology®: Pressure Care That Responds to the Individual

Pressure care cannot be considered in isolation from posture, comfort and function.

That thinking is central to CareFlex WaterCell Technology®, our dynamic pressure redistribution system included as standard within most of our specialist seating range.

WaterCell Technology® combines visco-elastic memory foam, high-elastic reflex foam and responsive WaterCells. The memory foam contours around the body to increase the supporting surface area, while the WaterCells and reflex foam provide responsive support. The fluid within each WaterCell reacts to changes in movement, helping to maintain contact with the supporting surface.

What makes this particularly important to us is that there is evidence behind the technology.

Independent research by Bartley and Stephens, published in the Journal of Tissue Viability, evaluated WaterCell Technology® in adults with limited mobility who remained seated for extended periods. The study found comparable pressure redistribution to other research in the field and reported low levels of discomfort. CareFlex's published evaluation reports that 92% of participants described the chairs as comfortable, while 80% reported being able to do more in terms of everyday activities and leisure pursuits while seated.

A separate independent pressure-mapping evaluation involved 34 assessments across different CareFlex chairs, positions and support surfaces. Under the conditions tested, average pressures with WaterCell Technology® were reported within a range of 27 to 32 mmHg and were lower than the reference chair across all CareFlex chairs evaluated.

Those results are valuable, but pressure mapping should never be considered in isolation. The published research itself reinforces the importance of considering comfort and the individual alongside interface pressure measurements. Effective pressure management should form part of a holistic assessment and wider posture and pressure care programme.

3. Tailored Solutions: Because One Size Does Not Fit All

No two people sit in exactly the same way.

Body shape, tone, movement, range of motion, asymmetry, pressure risk, transfers, function, environment and personal goals can all influence what an individual needs from specialist seating.

That is why adjustability and individualisation run through the CareFlex approach.

Every CareFlex chair is made to order, and when a standard configuration cannot adequately meet an individual's requirements, our Tailored Solutions service provides another route. A modification might be relatively simple, such as an additional pad or specialist accessory. In more complex circumstances, it can involve a significant alteration to the chair itself.

Importantly, this begins with assessment.

When a bespoke requirement is identified, the specification is considered by the CareFlex Tailored Solutions team, with a schematic drawing and quotation produced so the proposed modification can be reviewed and approved by the person responsible for the prescription.

That process matters because specialist seating should adapt to the individual wherever reasonably possible, rather than expecting the individual to adapt to the chair.

People are individuals. Their seating should recognise that.

4. Clinical Education and Justification: Building Confidence Around the Prescription

A specialist chair can only achieve its potential when the reasons for its prescription are understood.

That is why education has become such an important part of what CareFlex provides.

Our Info Centre on the CareFlex website brings together clinical evaluations, case studies, educational videos, product information, user guides, articles and practical resources for professionals involved in specialist seating.

Alongside those resources, CareFlex delivers webinars, study days and specialist seating training designed to develop knowledge and confidence around assessment, posture, pressure care and prescription. Current CareFlex CPD training specifically includes learning around identifying seating challenges, selecting appropriate interventions and supporting clinical justification and funding requests.

The distinction is important.

Clinical education should not simply teach somebody how to operate a particular chair. It should help them understand why an intervention may be appropriate, what outcome they are trying to achieve, how they can evaluate that outcome and how they can communicate the reasoning behind their recommendation.
