Lewis Reed Takes Wheelchair Accessibility to New Heights with Innovative Nelhi Ramp and GRANDE Roof Developments
Lewis Reed Takes Wheelchair Accessibility to New Heights with the Volkswagen Shuttle and Ford Tourneo Custom
More Headroom. Easier Access. Greater Choice.
Lewis Reed is introducing exciting new developments for two of its most versatile wheelchair accessible vehicles – the Volkswagen Shuttle and Ford Tourneo Custom.
With the innovative Nelhi rear-entry ramp, optional lowering suspension and the forthcoming GRANDE raised roof, both vehicles offer exceptional accessibility, flexibility and comfort at a competitive price.
From wheelchair positioning and passenger seating to specialist driving adaptations, Lewis Reed is providing more choice than ever before.
Innovative Nelhi Ramp – No Need to Cut Away the Original Floor
One of the most significant developments is the introduction of the Nelhi rear-entry ramp on both vehicles.
Unlike conventional lowered-floor conversions, the Nelhi system provides wheelchair access without cutting away or lowering the original vehicle floor, preserving more of the manufacturer's original design and engineering.
Customers can choose to retain the original vehicle suspension or opt for lowering suspension, allowing the vehicle to lower when required for wheelchair access.
This helps create a shallower ramp angle, making entry and exit easier, particularly for wheelchair users with larger powered wheelchairs or more complex mobility requirements.
The Nelhi conversion also offers an impressive entrance height of approximately 1,425mm (56.1 inches), providing valuable additional clearance.
For clients who prefer a platform lift, Lewis Reed continues to offer side-entry and rear-entry wheelchair lifts on both vehicles, ensuring a wide choice of access solutions.
GRANDE Raised Roof – Taking Internal Headroom to 58 Inches
Lewis Reed is taking accessibility even further with the development of its innovative GRANDE raised-roof conversion for both the Volkswagen Shuttle and Ford Tourneo Custom.
Designed to provide approximately 1,473mm (58 inches) of internal headroom, the GRANDE will offer additional space for taller wheelchair users and those travelling in larger powered wheelchairs.
For many clients, internal headroom and entrance height are critical factors when choosing a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
Combining the GRANDE raised roof with the Nelhi ramp and optional lowering suspension will provide an exciting new solution for clients requiring additional height without compromising the flexibility of their vehicle.
The GRANDE roof is currently in development, with demonstration vehicles anticipated in 2027.
Up to Seven Passenger Seats Plus a Wheelchair Position
One of the greatest advantages of the Volkswagen Shuttle and Ford Tourneo Custom is their outstanding seating flexibility.
Both vehicles can accommodate up to seven seated passengers plus a wheelchair user, depending on the chosen configuration, including the option of a double front passenger seat.
This makes them particularly suitable for larger families, carers and clients who need to travel with additional passengers.
Wheelchair positions can be arranged in several locations:
Front Wheelchair Passenger (FWP) – allowing the wheelchair user to travel alongside the driver.
Row Two – providing a central wheelchair position with flexible passenger seating.
Row Three – offering wheelchair accommodation towards the rear of the vehicle.
Flexible seating options, including tip-and-fold seats, allow the interior to be tailored around individual requirements.
Transfer-to-Drive – Greater Independence
For wheelchair users who wish to drive, both vehicles offer powered six-way transfer-to-drive seating, enabling suitable clients to transfer from their wheelchair into the driving position.
Additional adaptations can include specialist driving controls, electric sliding doors and automated entry systems, helping to make independent travel more accessible.
With multiple access options and seating configurations, both vehicles can be adapted to suit a wide range of physical and practical requirements.
Premium Accessibility at a More Affordable Price
The Volkswagen Shuttle and Ford Tourneo Custom offer an attractive alternative to larger, more expensive luxury wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Combining modern vehicle technology, comfort and reliability with Lewis Reed's specialist conversion expertise, both vehicles provide outstanding versatility at a competitive price.
Importantly, affordability does not mean compromising on choice.
Whether the priority is front wheelchair travel, additional headroom, passenger capacity, independent driving or easier wheelchair access, Lewis Reed offers an extensive range of solutions tailored to individual needs.
