From Care to Participation – Supporting Independence in Everyday Activities

From Care to Participation – Supporting Independence in Everyday Activities
Easy-Up keeps pots and bowls securely in place, helping make everyday kitchen activities easier to manage independently.
Sometimes, the difference between receiving help and participating actively can be surprisingly small. For occupational therapists, the focus is not only on making activities easier, but on enabling people to remain involved in the everyday tasks that matter to them.

From Care to Participation – Supporting Independence in Everyday Activities

For occupational therapists, independence is not necessarily about doing everything without support. It is about enabling people to take an active role in the activities that matter to them.

Sometimes, the difference between receiving help and participating actively can be surprisingly small.

Preparing breakfast. Opening a jar. Holding a bowl steady while stirring. Making a cup of tea.

These may seem like simple everyday tasks, but they are meaningful occupations that contribute to routines, confidence and the feeling of being able to manage everyday life.

From doing for someone to enabling participation

When a daily activity becomes difficult, the immediate solution can easily be for someone else to take over.

But occupational therapy encourages us to ask a different question:

What would make it possible for this person to participate more actively in the task?

Sometimes the answer is training or adaptation. Sometimes it is changing the environment. And sometimes a simple assistive product can remove one specific barrier.

The important point is not the product itself.

It is what the person is able to do because of it.

Small activities can make a big difference

Being able to prepare part of a meal independently may seem like a small achievement.

But participation in everyday activities can contribute to greater independence, confidence, continued involvement in familiar routines and reduced reliance on assistance for small daily tasks.

For occupational therapists, the goal is therefore not simply to make an activity easier.

It is to find solutions that allow the person to remain actively involved.

Simple solutions have a place in occupational therapy

Assistive technology does not always need to be complex.

A well-designed everyday aid can sometimes remove a practical barrier immediately and make an activity possible again.

This is the thinking behind Easy-Up, developed by Danish company Handigood.

Easy-Up uses vacuum technology to hold jars, bottles, bowls and other items securely on a smooth surface. This creates a stable working base and can support activities that would otherwise require two hands or considerable grip strength.

For an occupational therapist, the relevant question is not simply:

“What does Easy-Up do?”

But rather:

“What could this enable my client to do for themselves?”

Perhaps prepare breakfast.

Perhaps open a favourite drink.

Perhaps take part in cooking with their family.

These are small actions, but they represent something much bigger: participation.

From care to participation

At Handigood, we believe that good everyday solutions should support people in doing as much as possible themselves.

Not because assistance is unnecessary, but because every opportunity to participate can matter.

For occupational therapists, this principle is already at the heart of practice:

Do not only look at what a person cannot do. Look at what could make participation possible.

Sometimes, one small change is enough to turn assistance into participation.

Meet Handigood at the Occupational Therapy Show

We will be exhibiting at the Occupational Therapy Show at NEC Birmingham on 25–26 November 2026.

We would love to meet occupational therapists and other professionals to discuss how simple ADL solutions can support independence and participation in everyday activities.

Visit Handigood at Stand F30 and try Easy-Up for yourself.

From care to participation – one everyday activity at a time.
