Easing Patient Flow

Easing Patient Flow

Improving patient flow and reducing delayed hospital discharge has become one of the most significant pressures facing the NHS. OTs know that thousands of patients who are medically fit to leave hospital continue to occupy acute beds because appropriate support is not available at home. This costs the NHS £2bn annually and contributes to overcrowded emergency departments, delayed ambulance handovers, cancelled elective procedures and reduced bed availability.

A frequent barrier to discharge is the lack of accessible hygiene facilities in patients' homes which accounts for 12% of the delayed cases. Older adults, wheelchair users, people recovering from stroke, major surgery, spinal injuries or other mobility-limiting conditions may be clinically ready to return home but the assessing OT has seen that it is unsafe to do so because they cannot shower, wash or use toilet facilities independently. Traditional wetroom installations often take months to assess, approve and complete, leaving patients stranded in hospital beds while waiting for essential modifications.

Dignity Access is going to be involved in hospital trials to see how the WashPod modular wetroom range can provide a rapid and practical solution to this challenge. Easily deployable and designed for disabled access, WashPods can be installed within days rather than months, providing immediate access to safe showering, toileting and washing facilities. By removing one of the most common environmental barriers to discharge, WashPods create a fast-track route home for patients who no longer require hospital care.

The benefits extend beyond bed availability. Earlier discharge reduces the risk of hospital-acquired infections, deconditioning, falls, delirium and loss of independence associated with prolonged hospital stays. Patients recover better in familiar surroundings, while families and carers benefit from safer and more manageable care arrangements.

Supporting NHS priorities such as Home First, virtual wards and integrated care pathways, WashPod bridges the gap between healthcare timescales measured in days and housing adaptation timescales measured in months. In a system where every acute bed matters, modular wetrooms offer a cost-effective intervention that improves patient outcomes, accelerates discharge and helps unlock much-needed capacity across the NHS.
