The Course That Changed My Practice Is Back

The Course That Changed My Practice Is Back

Why Professor Anne Fisher's return to the UK matters to every occupational therapist.

There are only a handful of courses that genuinely change the way you practise. For me, learning the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) and the Occupational Therapy Intervention Process Model (OTIPM) with Professor Anne G. Fisher was one of them.

More than twenty years later, those ideas still underpin how I practise, teach and think about occupational therapy. They transformed my clinical reasoning, changed how I observe occupational performance and gave me a much deeper understanding of what makes occupational therapy unique.

Many occupational therapists will remember not just the AMPS itself, but the shift in thinking that came with it. Others, particularly newer members of the profession, have heard colleagues talk about it but never had the opportunity to experience that way of practising. When AMPS training ended, many assumed that chapter had closed.

It hadn't. Instead it evolved.

Professor Fisher has continued to build on the thinking that made the AMPS and OTIPM so influential. The result is Powerful Practice and the new Quality of Occupational Performance (QOP) tools—an evolution of occupation-centred practice that supports flexible, standardised evaluation of real occupational performance while remaining true to the principles that made the AMPS so powerful.

This November, Professor Fisher returns to the UK to deliver her three-day Powerful Practice: Planning and Implementing Authentic Occupational Therapy Services course. Participants will explore the latest developments in occupation-centred reasoning, the Transactional Model of Occupation, the OTIPM and the introduction of the QOP, with practical strategies they can apply immediately.

The healthcare landscape has changed dramatically, and the pressures on occupational therapists have never been greater. Yet perhaps there has never been a more important time to ask ourselves one question:

Are we still practising occupational therapy in the way only occupational therapists can?

More than twenty years after I first attended Professor Fisher's course, I still return to those same principles. That's why I'm genuinely excited to welcome her back to the UK—and why I believe many therapists will leave with the same renewed sense of pride, purpose and possibility that I did.
