From Assessment to Independence: eFOLDi’s Collaborative Approach with OTs
Occupational therapists bring specialist expertise in understanding how mobility barriers affect participation and quality of life. Drawing on that expertise, eFOLDi works in partnership with them to complement clinical insight with practical product knowledge, helping to identify the most suitable solution for each client. This collaboration ensures that mobility recommendations are clinically robust, person-centred, and aligned with individual lifestyles and aspirations.
To support confident prescribing, eFOLDi offers free home assessments, where an OT and an eFOLDi specialist visit the client together to evaluate their needs. These sessions allow therapists to observe how the equipment performs in situ, trial adaptations, and confirm suitability before any recommendation is made. Adaptability is central to this approach. Adjustments such as repositioning controls for a client with tremors, removing armrests for easier transfers, or tailoring seating for comfort can make a significant difference. Working alongside OTs ensures that the final set-up reflects the client’s functional requirements and daily routines, rather than expecting them to adapt to a standard model.
The eFOLDi range which includes the Lite & Compass scooters, and Navigator powerchair, has been developed around common clinical goals such as fatigue management, falls prevention, and sustained participation in meaningful activity. By supporting energy conservation, providing safe seated mobility, and encouraging engagement with family and community life, these designs align with the Care Act 2014, RCOT Professional Standards, and NICE guidance on promoting independence.
OT-led provision of lightweight, portable mobility equipment can have transformative effects. Clients who once relied heavily on carers are often able to attend appointments, visit friends, or shop independently. This not only boosts confidence and emotional wellbeing but can also help reduce pressure on health and social care services. Feedback from OTs highlights how eFOLDi products can integrate seamlessly into daily life; compact enough for small spaces, easy to lift into a car boot, and practical indoors or out, enabling participation without compromise.
eFOLDi’s approach complements the wider therapeutic strategies OTs already employ, supporting clients to maintain function and quality of life through practical, everyday independence. The partnership demonstrates that mobility provision can be both clinically robust and personally empowering, transforming independence, one tailored solution at a time.
