AKW Publish Accessible Design Guide for People with Arthritis
AKW, in association with leading arthritis charity Arthritis UK and The Occupational Therapy Service, have produced a brand-new design guide which offers best practice advice on how to specify accessible kitchens and bathrooms for people living with arthritis.

Arthritis is a progressive and often painful condition that affects joint mobility, grip strength and endurance, and can significantly impact day-to-day activities. More than 10 million people in the UK are currently living with the condition, with an estimated 350,000 people diagnosed each year.

While Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are the most common and well-known, there are several other types of arthritis, including Psoriatic, Juvenile and even Gout, which affect people in many ways.

With more people receiving a diagnosis earlier on in their lives, the guide also includes an interesting case study, which explores the impact the condition has on Lewis, 32 from Norfolk, who received his diagnosis in his late twenties.

Adapting the home environment, especially kitchens and bathrooms, can help people of all ages living with arthritis to remain safe, independent and engaged in meaningful occupations which benefit their overall well-being.

The new guide identifies common functional challenges found within the kitchen and bathroom environments and details a variety of adaptation strategies to help specifiers deliver a thoughtful adaptation for clients living with arthritis.
