Embodied practice: beyond the therapy room
This session will explore how occupational therapists use themselves as a therapeutic resource, considering how physical presence, body language, positioning, movement, tone, pace and self-awareness can influence therapeutic relationships, emotional safety, co-regulation and occupational participation.
Building on the foundations of embodied practice, the presentation will consider how these principles extend beyond individual therapy sessions into group work, classrooms, everyday routines and wider environments.
Drawing on examples from specialist education, the session will explore the relationship between therapeutic use of self and meaningful participation within trauma informed and neurodiversity affirming practice, particularly when supporting autistic and other neurodivergent children and young people, and those with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.
Although grounded in paediatric practice, the session will encourage participants to reflect on their own therapeutic presence and consider how embodied approaches can be applied across different occupational therapy settings, populations and areas of practice.
