Trauma and neurodivergence can present in surprisingly similar ways—from sensory sensitivity and shutdown to hypervigilance, avoidance and executive functioning difficulties. But the underlying mechanisms can be very different.
This presentation explains why trauma and neurodivergence can look alike, despite arising from different nervous system pathways. It outlines key OT assessment strategies and offers practical approaches to strengthen assessment, formulation and functional support, with a focus on trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming practice. The session highlights the OT’s role in safe interpretation, effective support planning and clear MDT communication.
