Tai Chi and Qigong in neurorehabilitation
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) can result in complex physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges that significantly impact independence and quality of life. This presentation explores the potential role of Tai Chi and Qigong as complementary interventions within neurorehabilitation pathways. Drawing on current evidence and clinical practice, the session will examine how these mindful movement approaches may support balance, postural control, motor relearning, cognitive engagement, fatigue management, and psychological wellbeing.
Attendees will gain an understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms that underpin these practices, their relevance to occupational therapy goals, and practical considerations for integrating them into rehabilitation programmes and community-based services. Through case examples and discussion of adaptation strategies, participants will discover how Tai Chi and Qigong can provide accessible, person-centred tools that support long-term recovery, self-management, and participation for individuals living with acquired brain injury and other neurological conditions
