"I do the seating": when lying becomes somebody else's problem

26 Nov 2026
Theatre 2

Postural care to protect body shape is a 24-hour concept, yet discussions often focus almost exclusively on seating. As a result, lying posture can become overlooked, with responsibility passing between professionals, services and families until it is effectively owned by no one.

Presented jointly by a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist, this practical session explores why lying posture is a vital component of effective postural care and how it supports comfort, body shape, function, sleep and long-term health. Delegates will gain an understanding of the basic principles of therapeutic lying, recognise when lying should form part of the clinical conversation, and consider how multidisciplinary teams can work together to ensure it remains an integral part of care planning.
