From placement to practice: embedding sustainability in occupational therapy through leadership, planetary health and green interventions

25 Nov 2026
Theatre 3
Sustainablity
This session will showcase the development of a pioneering sustainability leadership placement within Swansea Bay University Health Board in partnership with Swansea University and its contribution to advancing sustainable occupational therapy practice in Wales. The presentation will explore the completion of the first Occupational Therapy Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC) in Wales, highlighting lessons learned, outcomes achieved, and opportunities for students and universities to become involved in future PHRC initiatives.

Attendees will also learn about practical sustainability projects developed through the placement, including a green walking map and the ‘Small Action Big Impact’ infographic, a sustainability resource aligned with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists' sustainability agenda. The session will further demonstrate the application of green and blue interventions within mental health rehabilitation and recovery services, including activities such as litter picking, surfing, community supported agriculture, and nature-based prescribing. Examples will illustrate how these approaches can be adapted across a range of health and social care settings to support occupational participation, wellbeing, and environmental sustainability.
