From dismissed to understood: enhancing occupational therapy for people with persistent physical symptoms

25 Nov 2026
Theatre 1
Mental health Neuro

Persistent physical symptoms (PPS) such as pain, fatigue and weakness often lack clear medical explanation yet can cause significant disability and distress. Many people with PPS report feeling dismissed or misunderstood by healthcare services, rather than receiving compassionate, effective treatment. Occupational therapists often encounter people with PPS in a range of settings, but report uncertainty due to limited practical guidance. This presentation addresses this gap, translating doctoral research and lived-experience collaboration into clear, usable principles. Attendees will hear practical strategies and person-centred approaches to improve engagement, validate people’s experiences and deliver more acceptable interventions for people with PPS.
