#AnalysingTheOrdinary: From developing brains to rebuilding lives: Executive function and the power of occupational therapy
Executive function is the brain's goal-management system, enabling us to transform intention into action. It underpins our ability to initiate, organise, adapt, regulate and participate in everyday occupations, yet it is often misunderstood or viewed solely as an individual deficit. This session explores executive function through an occupational therapy lens, examining its development across childhood and adolescence, its role in neurodivergent conditions such as Autism, ADHD and Dyspraxia/DCD, and the impact of acquired brain injury and dementia. Drawing on neuroscience and occupation-based practice, the session demonstrates how occupational therapists uniquely analyse the interaction between person, occupation and environment to understand everyday challenges and translate complex neuroscience into practical, participation-focused interventions.
