Beyond labels: challenging stigma in dual diagnosis

26 Nov 2026
Theatre 2
Mental health

Occupational therapists are uniquely positioned to improve outcomes for people experiencing dual diagnosis- co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges- by addressing the impact of stigma alongside clinical needs. This session will explore how stigma can affect access to services, engagement in treatment, identity, and recovery, and how occupational therapists can challenge these barriers through compassionate, person-centred practice. Drawing on evidence, experience, and practical examples, the talk will highlight the role of meaningful occupation, therapeutic relationships, and collaborative working in supporting recovery. Delegates will leave with greater confidence in recognising stigma, reflecting on their own practice, and using occupational therapy to promote hope, inclusion, and equitable care.

Speakers
